A catamaran is a type of boat or ship which has two hulls joined by a frame. Catamarans can be sail or powered by a motor.

The name catamaran originates from the word "Kattumaran" of the language Tamil (a language spoken in India). Katturmaran literally means logs bound together, and when pronounced in English becomes Catamaran.

Catamarans have a wider beam (the distance from one side of the boat to the other), which makes them more stable.
