Bartolome |
Bartolome is the most visited adn photographed island in the Galapagos. Bartolome is a small island east of Santiago island and just off from Sullivan Bay. The island consists of an extinct volcano, and it is very colorful with orange, red, green, and black volcanic rock formations. Pinnacle Rock is the best known feature of this island. It is the remains of a an eroded tuff cone of an exstinct volcano. Its an easy climb to the summit of the 114 km spatter cone. The climb up is a wooden staircase with handrails, several resting and observation stops. The view from the top is amazing. Bartolome is a truly unique island with example of volcanism on slopes of this extinct spatter cone. Bartolome has even caught the attention of Hollywood. You may recognize some of the landscapes from the movie Master and Commander starring Russell Crow. Bartolome is located across from James Island and where a climb to the summit of the island reveals both the varied volcanic formations of Bartolome and a cross the ocean and the immense black lava flows on nearby James Island. A narrow isthmus on Bartolome supports Galapagos penguins and sea lions on rocky shores, brown pelicans and blue footed boobies on cliffs, waders and nesting green sea turtles on beaches. Galapagos lava lizards, Galapagos doves and yellow warblers all over. Galapagos penguins live at the foot of the rock to wich you can swim from shore or take a dinghy. Good visibility for snorkeling among exotic fish, rays, turtles, and sharks.
